St. Brigid Catholic Church

2250 Franklin Street
San Francisco, CA

View Map

St. Brigid's Parish was formed September 10, 1863 and has stood at the corner of Van Ness and Broadway for 107 years.

St. Brigid Catholic ChurchThe building contains many treasures: stained glass windows from Harry Clarke Studios in Dublin, Ireland; a Ruffatti pipe organ custom made for the church in Italy, and statuary by turn-of-the-century California artist, John McQuarrie, and the famed Irish sculptor Seamus Murphy.

When famed Irish sculptor Seamus Murphy carved the faces of the 12 apostles for the monumental statues on the front of the church, his models were the heroes of the 1916 Easter Rising. St. Brigid’s was determined eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in October 1995 and is listed in many catalogs of the city’s historic buildings.

Unfortunately it has been quite some time since the church has opened it's doors to the public. Many San Franciscans have joined together to fight to keep this historic piece of San Francisco up and running.

Congregation Keneseth Israel was founded as an orthodox synagogue by mostly Russian and Lithuanian Jews in the year 5663, which corresponds to the year 1903 on the civil calendar.

In those days the Jewish section of San Francisco was in the South-Of-Market (SOMA) area where the synagogue was originally located.

From the year 1905, you will find the synagogue listed as the only orthodox shul in town, along with two other synagogues still existing, temples Emanuel and Shearith Israel.

The synagogue continues in the orthodox tradition; it is the only synagogue in downtown, and has become the Jewish house of worship for professionals, business travelers and tourists in San Francisco.
