Taquerias

El Farolito

"Small, smoky and congested", El Farolito taqueria at 24th on Mission seems busy all day, everyday. Want to know why? They grill their tortillas in butter before making tacos and burritos, making this a San Francisco taqueria favorite!
Also, this place stays open until 4 a.m. on weekends (Friday and Saturday nights)-- which brings a post-bar line that often snakes out the front door and into the street.

Hours:

9 a.m. - 3 a.m. Sun. to Thu
9 a.m. - 4 a.m. Fri. - Sat.

2777 Mission Street
San Francisco , CA 94110

La Taqueria

After a quarter of a century, La Taqueria has become the standard for the locals in San Francisco. If you want great, filling and authentic Mexican food, head to La Taqueria.

Recommended Dishes:
Carne Asada tacos, carnitas (anything...trust me!), burritos and quesadillas.

Hours:

11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Mon. to Sat.
11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sun.

Taqueria El Toro

Taqueria El Toro occupies a serene corner at Valencia and 17th. Offering tacos and burritos in four kinds of tortillas with three kinds of beans, ten different meat fillings and four different salsas, it's a good place to start if you're new to the Mission. The menu is similar to the menu found at El Toro's sister taqueria on 16th Street, Pancho Villa.

Hours:

10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily

Pancho Villa

This Mission district taqueria has a line a from the BART station to the Roxie. But they know how to keep the eternal line moving, with it's fresh ingredients and fast cooks. The local artist wall is a nice touch.

Hours:

Daily: 10 a.m. to midnight

El Matate

This is one of my favorite taquerias in San Francisco! Off the beaten path of the famed "Mission District" this taqueria offers more of a neighborhood feel and a much higher quality of food. The prawns are just that, prawns, not bay shrimp and the steak is lean and the veggies are fresh. With outside seating and a newly expanded inside, El Matate makes it to the top of my list of places to eat!

Hours:

10am to 10pm 7 days a week

San Francisco, CA 94110

Mariachi's

This sunny, family-run taqueria is friendly and fun with a diverse mix of menu items. Some purists will turn their noses down at such Californian ingredients as pineapple and pesto in a burrito, but Mariachi's puts together tasty and healthy dishes without forsaking traditional recipes altogether.
Recommended Dishes:
Tacos, burritos plus pineapple, pesto, sauteed mushrooms and cactus fillings.

Hours:

11 a.m. to 11 p.m., Mon. - Sat.
Noon to 10 p.m. Sun.

Deli's

Sammy's Smoke & Snack

The owner, Sammy, is a dear friend of mine. His deli counter has been making my sandwiches for over 10 years now.
Always big- always with a smile!

Darby Dan's

This place is worth taking public transportation or a taxi or even renting a car to get to.. it is possibly the BEST sandwich in the Bay Area!! Located on Airport Blvd in South San Francisco, Darby Dan's has daily sandwich specials plus a full hot grill menu & a few beers on tap. I HIGHLY recommend the "Crab salad sandwich" which is a only available on Wednesdays, Thursdays & Fridays. The sandwiches are HUGE, they come on freshly baked Dutch Crunch rolls and don't forget to get the "jalapeno spread"!!!!

David's Delicatessen & Restaurant

"A Good Jewish Deli is about respite conviviality, and chopped liver."

My father and I enjoy coming into this Jewish deli for their Matzo Ball soup, sandwiches (pastrami on rye) and Coconut Macaroons (they are as big as your head!) Super yummy and lots of seating is available.

"Absolutely the Best Pastrami in the Whole Wide World."

Submarine Center

Yummy, big, toasted subs.. need I say more? This spot is a true locals' favorite!
Take any MUNI underground train outbound to West Portal, exit station, take a left and you are here... ENJOY!!!

Boxed Food Company

This is one of the best organic & seasonal deli's in San Francisco! When I want a fancy, artisan sandwich I come here. The service is friendly and fast and the bread is from Acme Bakery and is probably the best in town!

Yellow Submarine

Possibly the BEST sub sandwich in the Sunset, but a lot of locals would argue that it is the best in the city! Try the hot sauce.. it's GREAT! I recommend getting your sub and walking over to Golden Gate Park for a little impromptu picnic.. it's only about 2 blocks away.

Roxie Food Center

"You enter what looks like an ordinary, even unpromising, corner store that specializes in liquor, cigarettes, and a fridge full of soft drinks. But hidden behind a tall counter is a man — sometimes two — who keeps busy all day turning out big tasty sandwiches, made to order...We recommend the Roxie special: ham, salami, mortadella, American and Swiss cheeses, and the genius touch of marinated artichoke hearts."
